Search Engine Overview

Anyone who has experience with the Internet should be familiar with the concept of Search Engines. Unlike web directories which are updated and manually maintained by human editors, Search Engines are driven by search algorithms.

Why the need for Search Engines ?

Content is constantly being generated and published on the Internet. And when people have a need, they typically reach for their favourite Internet Browser to help them find an answer. Before Search Engines were around, people had to rely on web directories which were very much like phone directories in which web pages were organized manually in various categories. This probably worked well in the beginning but the sheer pace in the growth of the Internet quickly outpaced the capabilities of web directories.

Search Engines help us make sense of the Internet

Without them, it would be like navigating in a jungle without a map. Search Engines “browse” through content on the Internet (including new content generated daily) and organizes them into sorted lists for humans to read and utilize.

Unlike web directories in the earlier days, Search Engines’ reliance on search algorithms allows them to keep pace with the growth of the Internet. Huge farms of machines are running round the clock, browsing and sorting content into paged lists that are returned when people make queries through their Internet Browser.

The next time you key in a search phrase into your web browser, take some time to appreciate the reasons why you have ready information at the click of your finger tips.
