Marketing Your Business With Search Engine Traffic
As in business and many things, finding the right tools for the job is usually the key factor in determining success or failure. Similarly, finding the right search engine for your business is paramount to the success or failure of your marketing efforts to drive targeted search traffic to your site.
Understanding Google and How They Work
Google is the current market leader and their approximate market share as of late 2010 is a resounding 84.65%*. Google’s rise started around 2000 where they were able to achieve better search results than many other Search Engines. Their success revolved around their innovative use of “PageRanks” in which websites were ranked based on the number of backlinks (with the associated PageRank) that were coming to their site. The general premise of PageRanks and backlinks was that websites that were offering valuable content offerings would be linked to hence should be given relevant authority i.e. search ranking for their specific domain of information.
Google and the Rest of Them
Talking about Search Engine history would require us to go all the way back to the early 1990s. Saving us that nostalgic road trip down memory lane, we can probably discuss some of the more recent developments. Yahoo! is a distant second with 6.69% market share, followed by Baidu 3.39%, Bing 3.29% and the rest at a merger 1.98%.*
Bing is Microsoft’s rebranded search engine which was launched in mid 2009. And a month after that, Yahoo! And Microsoft inked a deal in which Yahoo! Search would be powered by the technology behind Bing.
Rankings, Advertising, and Search Engines
As previously discussed, the core service of Search Engines is to provide relevant results to the search phrases of consumers. The usefulness and reliability to retrieve relevant pages among millions of pages on the internet determines the commercial value of the search engines.
Search Engines are commercially driven by advertising revenue on their result pages. When consumers key in their key phrases, related ads would appear along with the search results returned by the Search Engines. Some Search Engines charge based on impressions (i.e. how often the ads are shown) and others charge based on actions (i.e. how often the ads are clicked).
